Dr. Slotnick is a graduate of SUNY College of Optometry where she also completed her Residency in Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation, along with advanced studies in Vision Science. She has attained Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry and the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. She leads seminars and workshops on vision training, with particular expertise in treating patients with Strabismus. She has contributed numerous chapters on this topic; recent authorships include: “Strabismus: Development, Diagnostics and Rehabilitation” in the book, Visual Development, Diagnosis and Treatment of the Pediatric Patient, 2 nd Ed., and “Strabismus: Challenging the Adaptation” as well as contributions to “Strabismus Therapy” in Applied Concepts in Vision Therapy, 2 nd Ed.

Recommended Pre-Requisite Course
This 2-day advanced seminar on strabismus treatment and management builds upon the binocular treatment principles presented and explored in the recommended pre-requisite course, “Tuning Binocularity: The Art of Facilitating Visual Biofeedback” (recording available for review). The advanced seminar provides a context to help optometrists and vision therapists relate to the world as seen through the eyes of the patient with strabismus. It provides systematic guidelines for facilitating binocular fusion in patients with strabismus, and offers an extensive exploration of the diagnostic and therapeutic use of the Slotnick Swirl®, specifically for strabismus rehabilitation.
Optional 1-day Workshop follows, for hands-on application and reinforcement. Outline and detailed description below.

Course Description

This advanced 2-day seminar builds upon the foundations established in “Tuning Binocularity,” which is strongly recommended as a pre-requisite course (recording available here). The advanced seminar:

-
Explores clinical considerations for analyzing the sensory status of the patient with strabismus.
-
Evaluates optometric findings in a sensory processing context.
-
Helps the clinician establish a prognosis and an effective plan for sensorimotor alignment through strabismus training.
-
Introduces the MIT (or “Slotnick Swirl”) as a diagnostic testing tool in strabismus management.
-
Helps clinicians interpret image projection responses, both normal and anomalous projection.
-
Provides a systematic plan for treatment and management of challenging patients with strabismus:
-
Includes prism compensation and reduction plan.
-
Includes guidance on how to determine of whether anomalous projection is interfering with sensorimotor alignment prognosis,
-
as well as appropriate treatment options for re-establishing normal projection or facilitating alignment in the presence of anomalous projection.
-
-
Provides recommendations for activities which support processing of visual information over 4 dimensions of space/time.
-
Provides detailed guidelines on how to prescribe lenses to facilitate binocular fusion in patients with strabismus.

The Workshop is offered as an optional 3rd day, applying techniques and assessments presented in the seminar (for in-person participants only). It includes hands-on therapeutic training with the Slotnick Swirl®, and reinforcement of case management choices. In addition, time is spent exploring visual projections and interpretation with the Brock Posture Board, from both doctor and patient perspective.
Case-driven discussion may include prescriptive management, primitive reflexes and syntonics applications along with therapy activities.

*Management strategies presented in the Workshop begin in the exam room and include prescribing from the therapy room. Therapists interested in attending are strongly encouraged to do so with their optometrists, as partnership will be necessary when implementing these strategies.
